August Blog - Star Volunteer and Creative drawing competition for children
Download DocumentWelcome to our August blog, where we share some favourite
walks and cycle rides in the Cranleigh area, announce the launch of our ‘Star
Volunteer’ competition, and let you know about our summer competition for
creative kids.
Walk this Way!
There’s so much to love about Cranleigh, but for many residents it’s the spectacular surrounding countryside that attracts them to this part of the world. We really are spoilt for superb walks and cycle routes, whether you prefer a bracing climb or a gentle stroll beside a canal. If you’re looking for some outdoors inspiration, here are just three suggestions for gorgeous walks this summer . . .
The Downs Link
Following the route of a disused
railway line, the Downs Link runs all the way from Guildford to
Shoreham-by-Sea. Perfect for walkers or cyclists, it covers 37 miles in total,
but you can opt for shorter sections, for example the 6.7 mile route from Run
Common, passing through Cranleigh and Baynards and ending at Rudgwick. (Tip –
treat yourself to refreshments at Rudgwick’s Milk Churn coffee shop, where
Sussex Charmer cheese on toast is a specialty.)
Leith Hill
This National Trust beauty spot is
set in the magnificent Surrey Hills. Park at Windy Gap and take the energetic
climb up to Leith Hill Tower. From here the 360 degree views are simply
stunning – at 1029ft (329m) this is the highest point in the south east of
England. The tower was built in 1765 as ‘a place for people to enjoy the glory
of the English countryside’. Two hundred and fifty years later the sights are as
awe-inspiring as ever. On a clear day, it’s possible to see the English Channel
to the south, and Wembley Stadium Arch to the north.
The Wey and Arun Canal
The central section of this wonderful restored canal passes very close to Cranleigh. The tow-path is perfect for leisurely walking, with lots of wildlife to see along the way. Passing through woodland and open landscapes of Surrey and West Sussex, walks beside this historic canal are full of surprises. There are many places to join the route, but you could try beginning at Shalford near Guildford, or further south at Loxwood. For more information visit the Wey and Arun Canal website at weyarun.org.uk
Launch of Star Volunteer competition
Do you know an unsung hero who
gives their time generously for the benefit of others? If so, why not help us
to recognise their efforts by taking part in our latest Roger Coupe Star Award
competition?
The Star Volunteer category is
intended to honour local, inspirational individuals who don’t always get the
appreciation they deserve.
Perhaps you know someone who volunteers
for a charity or a good cause within our community, whether that’s caring for
wildlife or working in a charity shop? Or you might like to nominate a kind
neighbour who selflessly helps others. Nominations are now open to everyone in
and around the Roger Coupe catchment area, which includes Cranleigh, Ewhurst,
Rudgwick, Dunsfold, Alfold, Shamley Green, Wonersh, Forest Green, Loxwood,
Ifold and Kirdford. To make a nomination
email starawards@pmwcom.co.uk with a short description of your
nominee, the work they undertake, why they deserve to win, their contact
details and where they live. Please also include your own contact details.
Nominations can be made until midnight on Wednesday 23rd August 2017.
Calling all creative kids!
The summer holidays are almost upon us, and parents everywhere
are wondering how they’ll keep their children busy over the long vacation. We
hope our latest kids’ competition will help engage their imaginations – and offer an insight into the
world of architecture and design.
The competition is
open to schoolchildren aged 7-16, and their challenge is to design an ultimate
dream home. Entries must be drawn, and can include unlimited luxuries and
mod-cons, from swimming pools to sunken baths, games rooms and fun garden
features.
Designs should be
annotated, highlighting the property’s location and top selling points.
Finally, we’d like entrants to include an ‘Offers in excess’ guide price – so
they can test their skills as property valuers too.
All entries will be
displayed on the digital screen in our Cranleigh branch window. The winner will
also see their entry appear on nationwide property portals including Rightmove
and Zoopla. It will be listed just like
a ‘real’ house, with property details, description, room sizes, monthly running
costs and a floor plan - all created by Roger Coupe.
To enter, either collect a template entry form from Roger
Coupe’s office or alternatively it can be downloaded here:
https://services-media.propertylogic.net/blog/1476188876/design_your_dream_house.pdf
Entries must be received no later
than Sunday 3rd September 2017. Each entry must have the following
information clearly stated on the back: Child’s
name, age and parent or carer’s full contact details.
