Christmas in Cranleigh – why we love this magical time of the year

November has arrived and here in Cranleigh, our high street is already looking festive. Christmas is a time we always look forward to – it’s a special season for everyone in the village, whether you were born and raised here, or have recently relocated to the area.

With such great transport links to London, Cranleigh has always attracted people who are looking to move out of the city and enjoy a more leisurely pace of life on the beautiful Surrey/Sussex borders. You certainly won’t find an ‘us and them’ mentality here - while there are still many families who’ve lived in Cranleigh for generations, most of the locals were newcomers themselves not so long ago!

One of the many things we love about Christmas is the satisfaction of settling families into their new homes in time for the holidays. Viewing a house for the first time in late summer often means a completion date of November or early December – although of course these times can vary a great deal depending on the chain of property transactions involved.

Here at Roger Coupe, it’s our job to help your sale go through smoothly, ensuring you receive your keys with plenty of time to put up the decorations and enjoy everything that Cranleigh has to offer at this time of year.

Dates for your diary

So what’s on in Cranleigh this festive season? Here are a few events you won’t want to miss:

·         Cranleigh Christmas Fair, Saturday 4th November 10am to 4pm

This is a fabulous fair held at the Wyatt Hall at Cranleigh Prep School. There’s a huge choice of high quality gifts from over 60 handpicked independent boutiques. With caterers on site serving everything from breakfast rolls to crepes and pizza, you could make a day of it and crack your Christmas shopping in one fell swoop!

·         Christmas Lights Switch-On, Saturday 18th November from 5pm

Every year, Cranleigh Chamber of Commerce co-ordinates our magical Christmas lights display. The grand switch-on event includes a programme of entertainment and is a fantastic evening for the whole family. There’ll be a funfair, live music, a continental market and late-night shopping. The lights will be officially switched on by a mystery special guest at 6.30pm (rumoured to be a reality TV star, but as yet unnamed . . .).

·         Art for Christmas, Saturday 2nd December 10.30am – 3.30pm

Hosted by members of Surrey Artists’ Open Studio, this event at the Cranleigh Arts Centre offers a great opportunity to buy beautiful and unique gifts created by local artists.

·         The Cranleigh Community Choir Christmas Concert, Thursday 7th December 8pm

With a varied programme of entertainment, this promises to be a hugely enjoyable evening featuring our local community choir along with professional guests, students and local dancers. And for those who love a singalong, there’ll be plenty of opportunity to join in the fun.

·         Dick Whittington Panto, Thursday 14th December – Saturday 16th December

Cranleigh Arts Centre once again hosts a traditional panto to get you into the Christmas spirit. Join Dick Whittington on his adventures as he journeys to London to seek his fortune. Songs, slapstick and silliness are guaranteed!
