Roger Coupe has been established in Cranleigh for just over 30 years, and during that time we have helped many families move to the area, or around it!  One of the great things about our location is that whilst nestled at the bottom of the Surrey Hills we are only 10 minutes away from the Sussex border.  As you head into Sussex there are some lovely villages which have a lot to offer – as well as being that bit nearer to the stunning south coast. The whole area is crisscrossed with public footpaths through stunning fields and woodland, and if you do fancy some sea air, the South Coast is just a thirty-minute drive away. There’s no doubt this great location is great for enjoying the best of both worlds in this fabulous part of the UK.

In this blog, we share our local knowledge of these villages so that whether you’re already local or considering a move to the area you’ll be able to find out more about some of these Sussex gems.

Rudgwick

Rudgwick is a lovely quintessential English village, just tipping into West Sussex but within 10 min drive of Cranleigh it is home to a lovely period pub and ancient church both situated at the top of Church Street. Properties are varied ranging from period cottages to Victorian and post-war homes, to recently built new homes most of which sit on either side of Church Street.⠀
The area is surrounded by countryside which has many footpaths and bridle paths ideal for walkers and equestrian activities.⠀

A small supermarket means not having to travel too far for the essentials, and there is also a chemist, hairdresser, doctor's surgery and dentist. ⠀The village also benefits from a number of local businesses being based at the Old Brick Works including the highly recommended Firebird Brewery and The Milk Churn Cafe with its signature dish of locally made Sussex Charmer on Toast! Famous for its amazing cheese toasties!

Loxwood

The village has the benefit of the Wey and Arun canal meandering through the village and the recently renovated Onslow pub on the edge of the water.  Loxwood canal has been restored over a number of years by some truly committed volunteers and there are often paddle boarders seen enjoying the views from the water. The River Wey offers kayakers lots of options.

There is a mix of period properties, family homes, and some well-designed new developments in the village. Famous for its Loxwood Joust during August, as well open-air cinema, there is a range of local societies and groups both for sporting activities and the arts that meet regularly and both a preschool and primary school in the village itself.

Also don’t forget the lovely smaller villages of Ifold, Kirdford, and Plaistow. These smaller villages have a true small community feel with the wonderful village shop at Kirdford as well as a local Primary school shared with Plaistow.  There are some lovely Grade II listed properties as well as newer housing stock.  For those who want to spend time outside these villages offer it all on your doorstep.

If you are considering moving to the area, we would really recommend combining viewings with a trip to one of the local villages and/or getting involved in an activity – it really helps set the scene for what sort of lifestyle you could expect if you moved to the area.  And whilst we love homes and houses – it is often the things outside our homes that make a move a real success or not.
