Fine dining: the top
spots for food and drink in the area.
The south Surrey/West Sussex border area is blessed with
stunning countryside, wonderful history and thriving, independent high streets
– giving residents and visitors alike a smorgasbord of choice when it comes
eating and drinking out.
Whether it’s a cosy tearoom, historic pub, authentic curry
house or fine restaurant, Cranleigh and its surrounding villages can serve up a
slice of whatever it is that’s tickling your taste buds. And as residents of
the communities we serve, all of us at Roger Coupe have excellent knowledge of
the gastronomic gems on our doorstep.
We’ve put together a list of our favourite spots – if you
haven’t sampled the delights at these foodie havens before, we urge you to give
them a try.
Carlo’s Trattoria –
Newlands Corner
Carlo’s has been a cornerstone of south Surrey life for more
than 30 years, serving up delicious, traditional Italian and Mediterranean
dishes from its bright, modern restaurant nestled among the beautiful, rolling
greenery of Newlands Corner.
We recommend Carlo’s ravioli, which is made fresh by hand
every day, delizioso!
Chequers Inn – Rowhook
This historic 15th century pub sits in the
picturesque hamlet of Rowhook. The kitchen team, led by head chef Tim Neal, use
locally sourced ingredients – including vegetables and herbs from the pub’s
garden – to create delicious British dishes.
The Chequers is a wonderful spot for a drink, enjoyed in the sun on the patio, or inside the pub’s cosy confines when the temperature dips.
The Curry Inn - Cranleigh
A staple of Cranleigh High Street, the Curry Inn serves
delectable, beautifully presented dishes from its huge menu seven days a week.
A firm favourite with the entire Roger Coupe team, its modern, comfy
surroundings are always busy.
As well as favourites such as tikka masala, madras, balti and
bhuna, the Curry Inn also tempts taste buds with signature dishes, including
tandoori king prawn masala and spicy lamb shank.
The Dabbling Duck –
Shere
For a quintessential English experience, Shere is hard to
beat. This charming village is steeped in history and its original buildings
and winding lanes have made it a hit with Hollywood film crews.
Adding to its perfect English charm is The Dabbling Duck, a
homely café and deli serving breakfast, coffee, lunch and cake. For a special
treat we recommend the Duck’s afternoon tea, served on vintage china and French
table linen.
The Stag on the River –
Godalming
Overlooking the River Wey, this wonderfully decorated pub
sits in a quiet corner of Godalming amongst gorgeous scenery. It’s a great spot
for Sunday roasts and its patio and garden are lovely in any season, but truly
stunning in the summer.
Behind the bar is a huge selection of beers, including many
from Europe, and among its gin selection are three local tipples, distilled in
Surrey and Hampshire.
